Treatment of hay fever
There are countless different nasal sprays for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), which can be roughly divided into three groups:
Antihistamines, as their name implies, suppress the effect of histamine. Unlike cromolyn sodium, which blocks the release of histamine from mast cells, antihistamines begin at the site of histamine receptors. So where histamine unfolds its effect (or would like to unfold).
Cromoglycic acid (also: DNCG = disodium chromoglicicum) suppresses the allergic reaction by blocking the secretion of histamine. Histamine, on the other hand, is precisely the body's own messenger substance that is released from the so-called mast cells in the event of an allergic reaction. Cromoglicic acid prevents that.
This can take two to four weeks. The reason for this is due to the mechanism of action, which is based on a reduced release of histamine from the so-called mast cells.
For particularly severe complaints of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), nasal sprays with Cortisone are a viable alternative. They sometimes take a day to work (sometimes much longer), so they are not necessarily suitable for the acute control of symptoms. But then they are very reliable.
Yes. Most commonly used are so-called antihistamines. They prevent the messenger from attaching histamine to its tissue receptors and triggering the allergic reaction cascade there.
Nasal sprays work faster than tablets. The nasal sprays commonly used in hay fever with a histamine blocker (medically: intranasal antihistamines) promote the drug much more quickly to the place of action than tablets, which must first bring the gastrointestinal passage behind.
In some cases, "intranasal antihistamines" (typical medical jargon) cause a slight burning sensation in the nose.
In the short term yes, long term no. Overall, you have to advise against cold sprays of colds (allergic rhinitis). Although the nose is released in the short term and you feel relieved. However, the cold sprays do not interfere with the allergic inflammatory process and therefore help in the shortest possible time. With prolonged use, they even hurt.
