It is often not that easy to find a competent therapist and get the right treatment. But this is crucial for the success of the therapy.
Special training for psychotherapists
To treat people with borderline, therapists must meet certain requirements. They need special training and therapeutic experience in effective treatments such as dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), which has been developed specifically for borderline disease.
They also need to communicate with other medics and therapists. This works best in a group practice or in networks that also include many other specialized practitioners.
No nationwide outpatient offers
Unfortunately, it is also difficult to find a suitable therapist because the current outpatient care situation is inadequate. Not all the necessary offers and structures are available everywhere to meet the special needs and needs of borderline people. Among the already often too few established therapists only some are specialized in the disease.
Beware of alternative forms of therapy
Others may offer alternative therapies that have not been effective so far. DBT is considered to be one of the most effective therapies for Borderline Personality Disorder and should therefore be used.
Therefore, it is important to ensure that therapists are able to treat the disorder prior to initiating treatment. If in doubt, you can also ask for training, experience and commitment of the therapist.
In addition, it is worth exploring the borderline networks, which are now in some major German cities such as Berlin, Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Munich, Weimar and Wiesbaden. It has been shown that networked dedicated DBT therapists work successfully and treatment discontinuation rates are relatively low.
