Headache throbbing and pulsating: tension headache or migraine?

A throbbing, pulsating or pounding headache is more characteristic of migraine. Especially if it occurs only one-sided. The typical headache with tension headaches, however, is dull and oppressive.

Of course, this is just a rough guide, and theoretically, completely different (even more serious) causes can be behind the headache. But for the two most common headache forms by far, this pain differentiation is characteristic.
