In men, in whom the prostate cancer causes no discomfort (which is usually the case) and in which the PSA value is below 20 ng / ml, according to most experts on a targeted search for distant metastases (eg in the bone) waived become. The probability that such are present is then very low.
On the other hand, if the PSA levels are greater than 20 ng / ml, screening should be performed to confirm the presence of distant metastases. This includes in particular an X-ray examination of the bones (bone scintigraphy). More intensive diagnosis is also necessary if the tumor has passed the connective tissue capsule of the prostate, adjacent lymph nodes are affected, or if there is unclear discomfort (e.g., bone pain).
